Over the past few years, there has been an exponential increase in people with bioethics related university degrees or diplomas in Pakistan. Whereas there was only one person with formal bioethics education in Pakistan in 1998, there are over a hundred in 2012, a sixteen fold increase. This paper will begin by describing the various bioethics education programs currently available in Pakistan, and their users. A qualitative study was conducted from August 2010 to July 2011 focusing on Pakistanis who had, or were pursuing formal bioethics qualifications like a Postgraduate Diploma or a Masters degree in bioethics. According to the findings of this study, the main reason for people to pursue this degree was because they hoped bioethics would equip them with means to address social evils, inequities and unethical practices they encountered in professional and personal encounters. For most, bioethics was a harbinger of change. This was in contrast to motivations noted in the West where an education in bioethics is regarded as an academic pursuit often aimed towards a career.Bioethics education had also made clear impacts on those who underwent the courses. They noted internal changes in themselves, their attitudes and behavior. They felt more humility with their new knowledge, and felt they were better communicators and were more sensitive individuals now.Respondents also noted changes in the attitudes of their colleagues with them. They observed that after their bioethics qualification, whereas some colleagues acknowledged them for their knowledge and expertise in this field, others felt uncomfortable in their presence and avoided them. There was a general perception of them having assumed the mantle of a Bioethics Police. Bioethics felt like a stigma for many respondents. With increasing numbers bioethicists with no discernable utility within institutions in Pakistan, the apparent laudable growth in this cadre of trained professionals also has its disadvantages. This will probably be true in the context of other developing countries also. There is therefore a need for seamlessly integrating bioethics within academia and the professions rather than developing it as a separate entity with little practical utility and with a holier than thou air about it.
